“Forest” wants to draw, the bare to the dressed, the only one in the whole of the slope to the gesture, a path of human evolution.
Men and women, also naked, six bodies lay on the ground, in a low and soft yellowish light. The lean in the lecture, the young to the mature, from white to black. Slowly, on the loop sound and lyrical, which imposes a continuity, they ramperont, join, agglutineront. Will be.
As a contemplative gaze on a vivarium human, this choreography Élian Mata, artist, multi, Forest wants to draw, the bare to the dressed, the only one in the whole of the slope to the gesture, a path of human evolution.
Forest would, according to its created, more a performance than a dance. But the journey is so written, the effects (lighting and sound) if worked, it will look rather like a physical partition. A partition axis simple : erection of body, evolution of ; each for himself, each in his or her trip, even during chance encounters.
Forest is strong in images, and seems to have been thought of there, visually. But light emanates from the paintings, because there is dissonance between the sophistication desired images scenic and physical labour, that all the long lack of depth, data.
The spatial composition remains primary. The body states are outlined. The presence of six performers oscillates between a posture “representation” and what seems to be a certain indifference to themselves, to their gestures, their partners, and spectators.
This back-and-forth night reading. Is it because the spectators are too close ? The space in a semi-circle and the seat to the floor works very well, however, circumventing traditional hierarchies imposed by the bleachers or on the stage.
Reminiscences of other works are superimposed, and the Forest suffers from these comparisons (Mette Ingvartsen, Christine Germain, Dana Gingras and Noam Gagnon with a flash of Monumental, almost, in the sudden frontal).
The final scene, this sudden parade, plated, taxed, is forced. The proposal, with its lush, very polite, seems to be indulgent towards it, and ultimately share little.
