The daily consumption of 200 grams of blueberry for a month seems to be able to improve the functioning of the blood vessels and to lower systolic blood pressure in healthy subjects, according to a new british study.

Researchers from King’s College London have asked 41 participants to drink each day is a beverage containing 200 grams of blueberries, or a beverage control. They then studied the substances found in their blood and their urine, blood pressure and the functioning of the brachial artery.

The scientists then wanted to compare the drink with the blueberries to a drink containing anthocyanins purified, the substance of the phytochemical that gives them color blue, red, pink or purple some fruits and vegetables. Beverages controls contained comparable amounts of fibre, minerals and vitamins found in blueberries.

The researchers found that the benefits on the arteries manifested two hours after the consumption of beverages with blueberries. They have lasted during all the months that lasted the study, and were detectable even after the fasting of the night.

The systolic pressure has been lowered to 5mmHg during the study, the effect often obtained by the medication.

The author of the study, dr. Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, has explained that it is better to eat the blueberries whole, but that the benefits seem to be mainly attributable to the anthocyanins. If the benefits seen during the study period were reproduced at the scale of a lifetime, she adds, the risk of suffering from a cardiovascular disease would be lowered by 20 percent.

The conclusions of this study are published by the Journal of Gerontology Series Has.
