Wheelchair jacket, thesis and other personal items of Stephen Hawking was sold at auction at Christie’s in London. The main part of the proceeds will go to Stephen Hawking and the British Association neurone disease.
Old wheelchair Stephen Hawking was sold at auction at Christie’s in London for $390 million, the buyer chose to remain anonymous. This was reported on the auction site.
The amount for which was purchased stroller, exceeded the estimated by experts Christie’s revenues 15 times. Only with the hammer gone 22 belonged to the Hawking of the subject, and the total amount received for them was about $1.8 million – seven times more than expected.
“The results of this wonderful auction, which was attended by more than 400 participants from 30 different countries show great admiration and love that Stephen Hawking has caused people around the world,”
– says Thomas Vening, head of books and manuscripts auction.
Hawking used the red wheelchair in 1980-1990-ies, yet was able to drive it by hand. Also purchased bidder gave more than $760 for the Hawking thesis “properties of expanding universes” in 1965 with the caption “This thesis is my original work” on the origin of time and space – two times more than expected.
The money raised will go to Stephen Hawking and the British Association neurone disease.
Also, for $52 thousand was sold black flight jacket of the academic, in which he appears in the documentary series “Favorite places Stephen Hawking” was released in theaters in 2016. A copy of the book “a brief history of time” Hawking “signed” with a thumbprint, was sold for $90 thousand From a few thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars were raised for the various scientific works in physics, his photograph, and also the script one of the episodes of “the Simpsons,” which appeared Hawking.
One of the lots was an invitation to a party Hawking’s time travelers. He posted it the day after the party, which eventually called for it.
“By the way, I have experimental evidence that time travel is impossible, – then told the scientist. – I once threw a party for time travelers.
I sent the invitation for the next day. I sat there for a long, long time, and waited. But nobody came”.
In addition to the things Hawking, participants of electronic trading was offered to the letters and hard copies of scientific works of the other three famous scientists: Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727), Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882) and albert Einstein (1879 – 1955).
Hawking died at his home in Cambridge on 77-m to year of life in March 2018. He was born born January 8, 1942 in Oxford. He graduated from Oxford University in 1962. At the age of 21 years the young man was raised a serious diagnosis – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als or Lou Gehrig’s disease), which for many decades he was chained to the electric chair.
Despite serious illness, Hawking has managed to defend my doctoral thesis and become Lukasovsky Professor at the University of Cambridge.
Hawking has made a significant contribution to the development of modern cosmology and the creation in 1975 of the theory describing the evaporation of black holes. This process received the name Hawking radiation. It consists in the fact that if near the event horizon of a black hole is born a pair of particles,
one of them can leave its borders, due to which the mass of the black hole is gradually reduced.
Later, Hawking has become known for its activity in the field of popularization of science, in particular after the release in 1988 of his book “a brief history of time”. The book was sold with a circulation of 10 million copies and been translated into 20 languages. After it was followed by other bestsellers: “Black holes and young universes”, “the World in a nut shell”.
Becoming a well-known popularizer of science, Hawking continued an active life despite severe illness and the inability to speak. He often traveled the world, met with leaders, visited Antarctica and Easter island,
experienced weightlessness on Board a special plane and was even thinking about space flight.
In recent years scientist have travelled less, but continued to speak out on important scientific and political problems of humanity. He spoke on the topics of health, ecology, the future of human civilization.
