Hackers compromise FBI email system, send thousands of messages

Hackers compromised a Federal Bureau of Investigation email system on Saturday and despatched tens of thousands of messages warning of a potential cyberattack, based on the company and safety specialists.

Faux emails appeared to return from a official FBI email handle ending in @ic.fbi.gov, the FBI stated in an announcement.

Though the {hardware} impacted by the incident “was taken offline quickly upon discovery of the issue,” the FBI stated, “This is an ongoing situation.”

The hackers despatched tens of thousands of emails warning of a potential cyberattack, threat-tracking group Spamhaus Mission stated on its Twitter account.

A replica of an email posted by Spamhaus on Twitter confirmed a topic line of “Urgent: Threat actor in systems” and appeared to finish with a sign-off from the Division of Homeland Safety.

The FBI is an element of the Division of Justice.
