The four-time champion Novak Djokovic reached the third round of the Rogers Cup with the Canadian Peter Polansky 6-3, 6-4, on Wednesday, in spite of the fact that the activities have been delayed briefly by rain on the central court.
Djokovic, who clinched his fourth title at Wimbledon last month, ended the match with seven aces and never faced a ball breakage in the course of this duel took an hour and 25 minutes.
Djokovic, the former no. 1 in the world, is the ninth head of series in Toronto. He has won the Rogers Cup for the last time in 2016.
This was only the second meeting between the veterans in their career, and their first in nine years. The Serb had defeated Polansky in their only previous match, at the Rogers Cup in 2009.
Polansky, a tennis champion 30-year-old native of Thornhill, Ontario, has risen to the 110th worldwide in June, but began the tournament in 121st place.
The rain drue who was shot dead on the campus of York University has delayed the start of activities about an hour, delaying the start of a day pretty busy during that run of five players in canada, including the Montreal Félix Auger-Aliassime, which celebrates its 18th anniversary.
Canadians Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov also need to play their match of the second round, as Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Toronto’s Daniel Nestor — the oldest player registered for the tournament at the age of 45 — and Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil will take part in their match of first round in doubles in late afternoon.
Nestor will officially announce his retirement after the Davis Cup in September. It will have played 30 Cuts Rogers since he has received an invitation to the tournament at the age of 16 years, in 1989.
Earlier Wednesday, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from the tournament due to an injury to his left wrist.
Del Potro, the third head of series, had to face Dutchman Robin Haase in the morning. Russian Mikhail Youzhny was replaced in the main array.
“I’m sorry to my supporters in Toronto, but I have to withdraw from the tournament because my left wrist needs a few days rest. I hope to see you next year in Montreal ! ” wrote del Potro on his official Twitter account.
Del Potro has also stated, in his original message in Spanish, that it would resume its activities at the Masters in Cincinnati, which will take place from 11 to 19 August.
