The bridge under construction to replace the Champlain bridge could be called bridge Samuel-de-Champlain.

The federal government proposes to add the first name of the explorer, according to reports Wednesday morning, Radio-Canada, which has interviewed the new minister of Infrastructure and Communities François-Philippe Champagne. It is said to be sensitive to the comments received.

The appellation “bridge Samuel-de-Champlain” is actually claimed for a long time, especially by historians and citizens.

Infrastructure Canada is seeking the opinion of its partners by August 24. Subsequently, the ministry will trigger a public consultation.

On 5 July, the elected members of the urban agglomeration of Longueuil have also adopted a motion that the new bridge is named Samuel-de-Champlain.
