The increase in the u.s. trade deficit registered in June is higher than anticipated by analysts, who had forecast at 45.6 billion after a lowest in 18 months (43,1 billion) recorded in may.

The trade deficit of the United States has increased significantly in June under the effect of a decrease in exports of cars and aircraft and an increase in imports in spite of the determination of Donald Trump in order to rebalance the trade.

The deficit of goods and services amounted to 46.3 billion dollars, an increase of 7.3 % – a first in 19 months, with exports down by 0.7 % to 213,8 billion and imports up 0.6 percent to 260.2 billion.

These data were released Friday by the u.s. department at Commerce at a time when China raised new threats of trade retaliation against Washington.

Beijing says he is ready to adopt new customs duties punitive damages on imports of american goods representing $ 60 billion per year, while the administration Trump is increasing the pressure on the asian giant to reduce the u.s. deficit.

The application of these new customs surcharges by the asian giant is ” suspended for the actions of the United States “, referring to the threat this week from the White House to meet 10 % to 25 % tariffs on $ 200 billion of chinese imports that need to be applied in September.

The increase in the u.s. trade deficit registered in June is higher than anticipated by analysts, who had forecast at 45.6 billion after a lowest in 18 months (43,1 billion) recorded in may.

Accumulated since the beginning of the year, the trend remains the same : the deficit falls again a sharp increase (+7,2 %) to $ 291,2 billion.

Soy suspension

In June, exports of civilian aircraft declined by 200 million, those cars 900 million, while imports of pharmaceutical products and petroleum products increased respectively 1.5 billion and $ 1.2 billion.

Exports in the sector of beverages and food have also decreased (0.3%) which could be explained by the trade tensions between the United States and its main partners.

Washington has imposed since June 1, the customs taxes are additional on the steel and aluminum, european, canadian, and mexican and its partners like Mexico, have responded by reinforcing the imports of american products in the food and agricultural sector.

The only exports of soybeans, have, nevertheless, still increased (+1.6% to 4.2 billion). Like last month, the importers of this commodity, in particular chinese, have probably wanted to increase the volume purchased before the entry into force of customs duties u.s. in early July. China is the largest market for u.s. soy.

This has not prevented the goods deficit of Usa with China widened again in June (+1.3% 32,45 billion u.s. dollars), while Donald Trump’s demands of Beijing, a reduction in the u.s. deficit of $ 200 billion.

The deficit of goods has also increased with Canada (+22,4 %), Mexico (+14,25 %), both partners of the Member-States of the treaty of free trade in north america (NAFTA) being renegotiated for almost a year.

The american president does not cease to denounce this agreement as it deems responsible for the destruction of thousands of jobs in the United States.

With the european Union, the goods deficit has rebounded 7.8 %.

With Brussels, an armistice trade has, however, been said last week during a meeting of the president of the european Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Trump in the federal capital american.

This truce has allowed the EU to move away, at least for the moment, the threat of tariffs on the imports of automobiles in the United States — and this especially concerns about Germany, a large exporter of cars in North America.
